Visitor Information
Visiting Baker Industries
If you are planning a trip to Baker Industries, please thoroughly review the information on this page. It is important for the safety of you and others, compliance, and ensuring you have a smooth and successful visit. Should you have any questions, please contact your Baker Industries sponsor.
Our manufacturing campus is located in Macomb, Michigan, about 50 miles (typically about one hour by car) northeast of Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW).
All visitors will be required to go through a registration process before being granted access to our facilities, which should ideally be started in advance at the link below. Visitors will be issued badges at check-in, which must be worn at all times.
Foreign Visitor Information
These guidelines are provided to make your visit to Baker Industries both productive and pleasant. We also want to ensure we provide a safe and secure environment for you and your information as well as for our people, property, and information. Please assist us in this effort by complying with our security requirements.
General Principle
All visitors to our facilities will be screened and required to sign an agreement to maintain compliance with the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and export regulations that are administered by the State Department’s Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC). To maintain compliance, we must ensure that controlled technologies or technical data are not inadvertently released to foreign nationals.
What is Export-Controlled Technology or Technical Data?
- “Information...required for the design, development, production, manufacture, assembly, operation, repair, testing, maintenance or modification of defense articles” (22 CFR 120.10 of the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR)). Note that “defense articles” includes a large portion of aerospace-related work and essentially all space-related work.
- It does NOT include information concerning “general scientific, mathematical or engineering principles”
- It does NOT include information already in the public domain, such as that available through unrestricted publications, unlimited distribution at conferences, or libraries
- It does NOT include fundamental research “where the resulting information is ordinarily published and shared broadly in the scientific community.” However, equipment used to produce the fundamental research may nonetheless be controlled.
Technology is "Released" When:
- It is available to foreign nationals for visual inspection (such as reading technical specifications, plans, blueprints, etc.)
- It is exchanged verbally, including by correspondence;
- It is made available by practice or application under the guidance of persons with knowledge of the technology.
Visitors refers to any non-Baker Industries employee. Common examples include visiting company representatives, students, researchers, or members of the media.
Will Visitors Include Non-U.S. Citizens?
All visitors will be asked to indicate their citizenship before being allowed access to our facilities. This will determine eligibility to participate in tours and other restricted activities. All visitors will be provided color-coded visitor tags so that it’s more readily apparent who cannot attend restricted areas or activities.
Escorts
The person in charge of your visit will ensure that non-US visitors are escorted when visiting our facilities and are not given keys/keycards, combinations, passwords, or other access to facilities in which export-controlled work is being performed.
Restrictions on Involvement
It may be necessary to restrict non-US visitors from participating in particular activities that would expose them to export-controlled technology or technical data. Please keep in mind that the production floor of Plant 1, all of Plant 2, and all of Plant 4 are generally considered export-controlled areas, meaning that non-US visitors will not be able to participate in tours.
